Steve Mac
Steve Mac (Steve McCutcheon, born on 15 January 1972, Surrey, England), is a songwriter, record producer and owner of Rokstone Studios in London.[1]
He has produced more than 23 number one singles in the UK and had several multi-million selling albums worldwide.[2] Amongst the many artists he has written and produced for are Il Divo[2] (20 million sales), Westlife[2] (Over 44 million sales), Susan Boyle[2] (14 million sales), One Direction, Ronan Keating, The Saturdays, JLS, Aggro Santos, Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Kate Winslet, Clay Aiken, The Wanted, and Cobra Starship.
Biography
Mac first learnt the piano at the age of 8. However his interest in music as a career did not begin until he did work experience as a teenager with producer Nigel Wright. This was in his dad's studio, at publishing company Skratch Music. He also was encouraged to pursue a career as a producer after joining a school band that needed a keyboard player. Although the band didn't take off, this experience cemented his decision to become a producer and songwriter.[2] Mac cites his early production influences as David Foster, Walter Afanasieff, Clivillés and Cole.[3]
After a year of working as a tape operator, Mac managed to persuade Nigel Wright to let him 'have a go' at making records on his own. The first track he produced was Chad Jackson's "Hear the Drummer (Get Wicked)" which peaked at number 3 in 1990. A short time afterwards he also co-created the track '(I Wanna Give You) Devotion', a song which he credits as his first ever composition.[3] The track went on to be released in its own right under the name Nomad and reached number three in the UK charts.[2]
Mac has received three BMI USA Writers awards, won MMF Producer Of The Year and also Record Of The Year three times.[2] In 2009, Mac was nominated for Producer of the Year at the Music Producers Guild Awards.[4] He also won a 2010 Brit Award in the Best Single Category for JLS 'Beat Again" and been nominated for the 2011 Brit Best Single Award for The Wanted 'All Time Low'
Other artists he has worked with include Toni Braxton, O-Town, Gareth Gates, Atomic Kitten, Boyzone, Ruben Studdard, 5ive, Samantha Mumba, Damage, Mike Hunt, Vanessa Amorosi,[5] Trace Adkins and The Saturdays.
